Station 2

The prominent location near the city wall and the seat of the sovereign, the so-called High House, indicates the socio-political relevance of the mendicant order of Franciscan monks. In 1320, the last Ascanian sovereign of the Mark Brandenburg, Henry the Child, died and a warlike dispute broke out over the land, which Ludwig the Bavarian, from the House of Wittelsbach and later Emperor, won. Unlike the Ascanians before them, the Wittelsbachers, as Margraves of Brandenburg, now chose the Franciscan monastery as their burial site, which shows the importance of the site and its connection as a place of faith as well as a symbol of power.
